Becoming a Poll Worker

We are always happy to hear from people who would like to work at the polls on election days.

Here are answers to some FAQs about what is involved:

  • A short evening training session is mandatory.

  • The positions are paid (you will not be working for free). Snacks and an evening meal are provided.

  • It is a long day. Poll workers are expected to arrive at their assigned polling places shortly after 5 a.m. and are dismissed after the polls close at 8 p.m. and all post-election duties are completed.

  • You are not required to be a registered voter. Sixteen-year-olds who are not yet eligible to register, for example, may work if they complete training and have written permission from a parent or guardian.

  • You are not required to be affiliated with a political party.

  • We make an effort to assign workers to their own polling places, but this is not always possible. In such cases, poll workers may vote by absentee ballot.

  • These are not political jobs. Poll workers are expected to leave their political opinions outside the polling places.
